Why Weren’t H1N1 Vaccines Available for Children Before School Started?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Today, Sen. Bob Graham and I kicked off the Faster Vaccines Campaign. The United States—unlike the European Union and China—continues to use a 60-year old production method, using chicken eggs, to make H1N1 and other important vaccines. This is not just a public health problem, it is a national security threat. As you know, threats against our national security are also a threat to economic security.  You can read more about this correlation in our Focus on Defense section.

Watch the video and share it with others. More people need understand the importance of supporting faster alternatives that are just as safe. Send your comments to preventwmd.gov, and we will pass along your thoughts to those who can make a difference in Congress and the White House.

Political Uncertainty Puts Freeze on Small Businesses

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

The following article in today’s Wall Street Journal accurately drives home a hugely important point: unpredictability kills jobs and growth. The government simply has to understand that businesspeople are PEOPLE, and just like the rest of us they don’t like going out on a limb that could get sawed off.

How can we blame people who are reluctant to make  commitments which they may not be able to afford if the government raises taxes or the costs of compliance with government policies? This is especially true for small businesses, which are the engine of job creation and growth.

I’ve said before, government hurts the economy by doing what it shouldn’t do. Examples: taking too many resources through taxation, costly regulations, or excessive borrowing, interfering with decisions that individuals or the business sector should make — or creating an atmosphere of  unpredictability that discourages people from investing time or money in the economy.

Economic growth isn’t easy. It takes hard work and courage. The problem outlined in this article was the entirely natural and foreseeable result of the unprecedented direction in which Washington is taking us.

Sen. Talent on Fox2 in St. Louis

Monday, October 26th, 2009

As a country, we are not adequately prepared against the threat of a bioterrorism attack. I am Vice Chairman of the Commission on Weapons of Mass Destruction, Terrorism and Proliferation. We recently issued a bipartisan report making specific recommendations on steps that would increase security in the United States. This morning I was on Fox2 in St. Louis to discuss the report.  You can watch the segment using the link below.

This topic is relevant in preparing against a terrorist attack,
but also the current outbreak of H1N1 virus. If the President asked today how many people were infected with H1N1, there is no system in place to accurately provide an answer. We’ve known for months that the H1N1 virus was coming and we still aren’t prepared. This is a real concern and more should be done to protect Americans.
