Last week I talked with national radio host Lars Larson about the failed terrorist attack in New York’s Time Square. Now we know that he was trained and funded by the Pakistan Taliban. While I am thankful that this event failed, it is just another example of the persistence and dedication of those who wish to destroy freedom and democracy.

Tax Day is quickly approaching and Americans are sending their hard earned money to Washington in the form of a federal income tax. While American families are tightening their belts and making tough choices about their budgets, leaders in Washington are spending beyond their means. This reckless spending is putting our government in peril and it has real impacts on the economy. Renowned budget expert, Brian Riedl, The Heritage Foundation’s lead budget analyst will join former Sen. Jim Talent and Ambassador Ann Wagner for an online town hall to discuss federal spending. Riedl is a well-known policy expert and has built a solid reputation for interpreting, explaining and reforming the often arcane realm of federal budget policy and its impacts.

Thursday, March 25th, 2010Missourians Remain Opposed to Health Care Reform Legislation
Wednesday, March 24th, 2010American Freedom and Enterprise Foundation Online Town Hall Draws Hundreds Opposed to Government Takeover
For Immediate Release: March 24, 2010
(St. Louis) – Hundreds of Missourians joined Former Sen. Jim Talent and Heritage Foundation’s, Dr. Robert Moffit to register their questions and concerns with the health bill signed into law yesterday by the President.
American Freedom and Enterprise Foundation partnered with the Heritage Foundation to host an online town hall on health care to answer questions about both the legislative process and the short and long term impacts of the bill.
“The government is already borrowing at a rate that is unsustainable, to fund the obligations it has already undertaken let alone nearly $1 trillion in new spending included in this legislation. Anyone who believes that this bill will actually reduce the debt is not facing reality,” Talent said. “The true price tag of this legislation will be far greater than the current estimate and passing a big new program is not the ‘substantial fiscal adjustment’ we should be considering during this economic crisis.”
“The President has signed, and now we must grapple with a highly unpopular health bill. It includes new taxes and government spending, bunches of federal boards and bureaucracies, mandates and penalties and an entitlement expansion,” Moffit said. “We overwhelmingly heard today that the American people don’t support this bill and will look for opportunities to overturn the government intrusion into their health care.”
“More money and increased government regulation will not address the challenges facing our current health care system,” said Dr. Charles Willey, St. Louis physician. “As a doctor, I diagnose patients and understand our national health care system. This bill does not begin to address the distortions in health care markets and perverse economic incentives that drive costs up. Those solutions can only be found in the free market.”
Talent, Moffit and Willey as well as the hundreds of participants in the forum agree that Congress should repeal this unpopular legislation and start working on real reform that will actually achieve the goal of bending the cost curve down and making health insurance available to the millions of Americans who currently do not have access.
The American Freedom and Enterprise Foundation is a unique clearing house for ideas and discussion based on free market principles as solutions to public policy. U.S. Senator Jim Talent and Ambassador Ann Wagner serve as Honorary Co-Chairs of the American Freedom and Enterprise Foundation.

Talent Meeting with Leading Security Experts as Member of Department of Defense’s Quadrennial Defense Review Panel
Tuesday, March 16th, 2010For Immediate Release. Contact: Katie Smith 314-625-5107
St. Louis. – Sen. Jim Talent, American Freedom and Enterprise Foundation Honorary Chair, is meeting tomorrow with leading security experts as an appointed member of the Congressionally-mandated Independent Panel. The panel was created to assess the Department of Defense’s Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR). Talent was appointed to serve on the panel in December 2009.
The 8-member panel will be briefed by top security experts at the Department of Defense and will provide feedback on the content of the draft report: http://www.defense.gov/qdr/images/QDR_as_of_12Feb10_1000.pdf. The document Talent is guiding and reviewing will determine the direction of America’s defense programs for the next four years.
“I am honored to serve on this important panel. The threats against the U.S. are real and a strategic approach is vital to promoting national security,” Talent said. “I am however concerned that the defense budget does not reflect these threats. I have always been a strong proponent of increased military funding as a crucial investment in freedom and security for our country.”
The Quadrennial Defense Review will assess the threats and challenges the nation faces and re-balance Department of Defense strategies, capabilities and forces to address today’s conflicts and tomorrow’s threats. The QDR is one of the principal means by which the tenets of the National Defense Strategy are translated into potentially new policies, capabilities and initiatives.
The panel is required to provide the Secretary of Defense and Congress with an initial report in the spring of 2010 and a final report by July 15, 2010. In addition, the Secretary of Defense is required to respond to the panel’s final report and its recommendations no later than August 15, 2010.

Thank you to everyone who is joining us to discuss the recently passed health care legislation today and thank you to everyone who submitted questions online via the website and Facebook.
