Political Uncertainty Puts Freeze on Small Businesses

The following article in today’s Wall Street Journal accurately drives home a hugely important point: unpredictability kills jobs and growth. The government simply has to understand that businesspeople are PEOPLE, and just like the rest of us they don’t like going out on a limb that could get sawed off.

How can we blame people who are reluctant to make  commitments which they may not be able to afford if the government raises taxes or the costs of compliance with government policies? This is especially true for small businesses, which are the engine of job creation and growth.

I’ve said before, government hurts the economy by doing what it shouldn’t do. Examples: taking too many resources through taxation, costly regulations, or excessive borrowing, interfering with decisions that individuals or the business sector should make — or creating an atmosphere of  unpredictability that discourages people from investing time or money in the economy.

Economic growth isn’t easy. It takes hard work and courage. The problem outlined in this article was the entirely natural and foreseeable result of the unprecedented direction in which Washington is taking us.
